This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

  • Morphy won't win the Morphy's head for this game

  • When pausing the video, why not push the pawn D5 to D6?

  • agamator's funny moments - senewss.info/slow/iLeZZtB1ad7LqJk/video

  • You are going to cover the Morphy-Anderssen match, right?

  • I thought for sure the move was gonna be f4 lol... haven't gotten one wrong in awhile. Now I see hanging your own rook isn't so nice.

  • Do we know if Lowenthal was really so aggrieved about his previous loss to Morphy?

  • whoops, overlooked something. Sorry.

  • Really bad timing for the tournament in Nov. 1, 2020. Really bad. I suspect on Nov 3 and 4, chess will be the last thing on anybody's mind in the U.S., for obvious reasons. I don't know, maybe chess will be a welcome distraction.

  • I think rook X knight is the best move after the pause

  • That was a top tier "Hello Everyone!"

  • 6:00 Wouldn't it result in a checkmate (or at least a free rook) if the queen would have just taken the rook on E8

    • Yes, it would result in checkmate, but for the wrong side

  • Can't you capture queen & rook with white on 5:42 and that's checkmate?

    • @Jonny Hirse I see!

    • black will take your f2 pawn and checkmate you

  • You haven't been putting many videos out the last week or so mate.. Missing my chess analysis fix lol

  • Can you show the game played between GM Bassem Amin - GM Sahdwani played in the grand swiss tour 2019?

  • FINALLY CANDIDATES ARE RESUMING!!!!!!!

  • Notice that usually when morphy loses a game is in above 60 moves. Rarely in 20. He seldom blundered while the others made mistakes or impreciosions way more often, even when they emerged from the opening in better positions. His defense here although impossible was always persistent and very obstinate. Hence 70+ moves.

  • gotta give him the Morphy head for that one....

  • At 5:32 did morphy blunder back rank mater

  • A chess set for me.... Please sir... With a book.. I want to become a better player.. 😊.. I would be thankful

  • very instructional endgame!

  • At 13:25 Lowenthal could have forced a queen trade with Qd3+, but it works out the same anyway. It isn't always a good idea to trade down when up material, but this is one of the usual cases when it is indeed advantageous to do so.

  • What sort of windmill was that one? It needs a name.

  • 4:54 if Rc8 then lowenthal goes 1.Nxc7 Rxc7 2.Rd8# So the c7 pawn still hangs even if Rc8 right?

  • @5:42 why not White Queen captures Black Rook?

  • Lowenthal played that endgame quite well. So far, some of my favorite games in this series are when Morphy loses. I love Morphy, but he's always described as unstoppable. It's very interesting and instructive when he loses.

  • The candidate tournament was soooo good I can’t wait for conclusion

  • 3:01 That was probably the quickest "Sorry about that" ever.

    • And he didn't even tie his shoelaces

  • Jesus saves

  • I don’t get it. In 4:52 why couldn’t black have played Rf7 and stopped Rd7 the next turn?

    • Then white plays Rd8 and black is forced to play Rf8 to block. White takes and it's checkmate.

  • Lowenthal probably went home celebrating after that game

  • I’m a simple man. I see Morphy, I click.

  • “Paul Morphy... expressed the conviction that he had played poorly, rashly; that none of his opponents should have done so well as they did against him.”

  • Go Löwenthal, you can dooo eeet!

  • Thx!

  • #HELP: 🛑Chess Puzzle🛑 You have to create a position where white has king and 3 pawns and black has only king. Following are the necessary conditions of this puzzle. 1️⃣Arranged position will be white to play. 2️⃣White will play for win but the final result will be a forced draw with accurate play from both sides. 3️⃣No double or triple pawns are allowed (for e.g. a2,a3 or b5,b6,b7).

  • Just won my first game with black peices.. I'm so weak playing black. 30% draw and 70% losses while playing black.

  • Löwenthal really studied the endgame. So skillfully played!

  • fantastic game.

  • he miss ne6 at 6:00

  • "this move is a bit more resilient" = "he was already losing, but now he is losing faster"

  • At 5:40, why not just Queen captures, then took captures and rook captures, Black has Back rank issues

    • If white moves the queen away from defending the pawn on f2, black plays Qf2 check and then Qh2 checkmate

  • 4:55 you cant defend the pawn with the rook since if kxc7, rxc7 than rook to d8 is check mate . . . or am i missing anything

  • "The most powerful weapon in Chess is to have the next move unless you are in Zugzwang"

  • Was anyone else hoping for a Stafford's gambit lol

    • Michael Cleversley I certainly do my friend. I also love Obama

    • @Owen Roberts only if your a cool guy and play chess and dnd and have epic discord statuses

    • @Michael Cleversley Would you like to be my friend

    • Ah yes I was hoping for this opening gambit as well because IM Eric Rosen has been known to dunk on people with that opening and I was hoping to see Paul Charles Morphy dunk on a fool

  • Great Saga - still so exciting today.

  • 4:54 here you can even play Nxc7

  • Very poor sportsmanship by Morphy. He was lost and it seems disrespectful not to recognize a lost position. You can be the best and be humble. Online chess... ok... but in 1858 seems a bit over the edge arrogant.

  • Kudos to lowental. A first good night sleep after 8 years.

  • Waiting for the Hikaru Blunder Head 😝

  • Lowenthal must've been so hurt when kiddo Morphy tossed him

  • Eric Rosen is sad that Morphy didn't go for the Stafford Gambit.

  • Isn’t it back rank checkmate at 5:43

    • No, because you allow black to checkmate in 2 with Qxf2+ followed by Kh1 and Qxh2#.

  • the morphy saga would be easy to follow if you numbered your entries. 8 years waiting. 50 fool me twice. 51 a turning point. 52

    • I thought this too and posted a comment about it a while back but Antonio replied saying he didn't think it was a good idea.

  • Excellent game! Thank you.

  • Do we actually know that Lowenthal was annoyed he lost in the past and was trying to prove he was better?

  • 5.42 when morphy went for Re8 Couldn't lowental just capture the rook with queen and trade queen for two pieces and it would be forced checkmate?

    • If QXRe8 2 +QXf2 3 Kh1 4 # QXh2

  • Morphy got a white pices he killed him

  • Nooooooooooo...... Morphy never fail !

  • That was a great hello everyone

  • This easily makes the list of Morphy's worst games. Lowenthal's "see saw" pressure of the black king on the 7th and 8th ranks could have been continued a little longer before capturing the running pawn. Morphy's troubles begin with 18...Nxf6. This retreat capture is very un-Morphy where 18...Qxf6, looks obvious and natural. The only thing that makes sense for this choice is that Morphy wanted to keep that once removed attack on the pawn after white's king bishop was captured. All in all, opening theory of the day contributed to Morphy's defeat here. 8... Be6 is not followed up properly. Nb4 has to be played before castling or else white siezes strength along the a2-g8 diagonal. As we saw in the game.

    • Morphy seldom employed the Petroff. This shows why.

    • Even the beginning was terrible he didnt develop many pieces right away but kept playing the same pawn again and again :)

    • Thanks for the additional analysis, was thinking about that!

  • Great saga..

  • I feel jaded by Mr Morphy’s loss.

  • I think Morphy was counting on Lowenthal eventually blundering (based on the previous games) and so he didn't take enough thought to defense. But Lowenthal played flawlessly -- nothing brilliant but always the move avoiding traps. Bravo, I didn't think Lowenthal had it in him (and obviously neither did Morphy).

    • @David Anderson 😂

    • And it was on this day that Lowenthal changed his name to Highenthal.

  • What does it mean to he up the exchange

  • You know Lowenthal was just banging on his chest after that game.

    • It has to be a mixed blessing when you can say that you finally beat the kid.

    • He got his redemption. 😂

  • Morphy😘😘😘

  • I guess Morphy left his engine at home that day lmao

    • @David Anderson That's true. I guess he could have left his brain at home as well...

    • Good one. Though Morphy can always be considered the original Steam Punk of chess.

  • Hey Lowenthal, not sure if you remember, but you lost a match to Morphy back in 1850.

  • is it only me who satisfy with morphy loses the game ?

  • Please stop those passive aggressive title to thumbnail messages. It is annoying as hell and I will not watch any of your videos that include it. You are the only A+ chess channel out there imo. Don't do this to me please.

  • Seems like morphy was totally outplayed here. Also seems like he’s been getting out played until someone makes a mistake and is able to capitalize on that mistakes instead of totally being dominant.

    • Looks like that, when he continued with knight against rook and a pawn less, definitely waiting for a blunder.

  • Lowenthal was relentless that day

  • Hi agadmator!! Can we talk via a call or....mail Just your greatest fan's humble request!! Thanks and Regards 18usb10129@unicentbachupally.in

  • agadmator: if this the first game u r checking of Morphy don't think low of him, go check the saga from beginning. Me: who r those unfortunate ppl. ... meanwhile Morphy to agad: Thanks for defending me

    • There is this tribe in the rainforest. Very unfortunate ppl. However they do make great chesspieces bcoz they have access to wood that is off limits to the rest of the world.

    • @Ryan Flanagan why

  • If Rc8 you can still capture the pawn cuz if Rxc7 there's Rd8 mate

  • Super game..and as always equally good analysis by our agadmator!

  • 6.01 what if white just capture the rook with the queen???? Guess its a mate in 3 then

    • Oh yeah

    • I looked at that too but black doesn’t cooperate by taking the queen. He just plays Qf2+ followed by Qh2#

  • Last time I was this early, Ruy Lopez had a day job.

    • And you, sir, win the award for best comment on this video.

  • A point for Löwenthal!

  • #suggestion: Sir, can you make a video on a game played by Mikhaïl Tal and Alexander Koblentz? You already made a vid on a game played between these two. But, I am talking about a different game. This game includes A QUEEN SACRIFICE. senewss.info/slow/q6TMpM13Y9irirY/video The link contains the moves of this game. Pls like this comment for agadmator to show this AWESOME GAME.

  • I always enjoy the good stuff mannn.

  • Morphy never takes other serious

  • noooooooooo morphy lost

  • #suggestion can you change to hello everyone to hi all to annoy some people ?

  • What a great saga...

  • Can you do Fischer Spassky game 13 people say it's good but I don't get it without your sage presentation

  • 6:01 why is Qxd8 not an insta-win since the rook can’t capture the queen?

  • I feel the greats will play sub-optimal moves intentionally just to feel out their opponent as well as give themselves a challenge. I think Morphy was getting bored so he played a few poorer moves to make things interesting.

  • Lowenthal finally accomplished his life's mission.

  • Agadmator please bring the game of Rashid and Mikhail Tal.

  • Just watched PH and now I'm here
