This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

  • What would happen if he did Queen to G6 instead of D6 at the end? Isn’t that a mate in 3? He can’t defend the G2 square, or Queen amhas to capture the Rook right?

  • Any advice- best way to load a game into an engine...?

  • I've never really been compelled to leave a positive comment on a SEnewss video, but you are one of the best channels I watch. Your videos are entertaining, professional and informative, and It's clear to see you put a lot of preparation into your work, so I'm sure you are also an excellent chess player ;).

  • "Watch the game I mention here" Link in the description was the best elaborate joke i've seen in so long. You're amazing Antonio.

  • At 08:54 I found another winning move (not mate) ...Qb6-g6 , Qc3-c8+ Kh8-h7 , Qc8-g4 Qg6-d6+ , Qg4-g3 Rh7:g3 , f2:g3 Be4-c6 and winning the endgame.

  • Isn't it an advantage to spot the F7 pawn? You can never make the mistake of playing F6.

  • I still don't understand what Morphy was playing at when he made Qb6. It almost seems like he was saying "Look, I gave you a Pawn and then a Queen" because his Queen was almost irrelevant during the King-side attack of Owen, only becoming important when Morphy had already weathered the storm. When starting with such a handicap, I would have thought that the Queen's main early role should have been protecting the King-side. Was Morphy just insulting Owen over the board?

  • Paul Morphy the oopa loompa haircut

  • Bruh john is an idiot

  • Morphy is like a snake in the grass. He just waits for you to take one misstep and then he strikes.

  • Isn’t any game agatmator shows quite the game

  • Why not qxc5 instead of qa3 for owen . He could easily deafend the knight while capturing an undeafended pawn!

  • #suggestion Hi, please can you look at game 1 between David Pakman and easywithaces in their pogchamps match, it was an insane game

  • Ever watched "Monty python and the holy grail?" "find the mate in 5" "It's 3, sir"

  • Y F7 pawn is not there?

  • Why you are not covering Chess Olympiad?

  • Guys at 3:48 how did Owen's miss Q.F3? I didnt look with an engine but this seems odd.

  • Analyse the game from the Chess Olympiads semi finals India Vs Poland Armageddon match

  • Binod

  • Your analysis of these no-pawn matches is nonsense and meaningless, and we do not benefit from it at all .. Please go back to analyzing meaningful matches.

  • why did Morphy remove his f7 pawn?

  • "And now h3, making some breathing room for the king"

  • Agadmator: Morphy has 2 bishops for Owens rook. Owens 3 extra king-side pawns: Are we a joke to you?

  • 0% editing 0% special effects 100% real good content

  • The beast awaken😂

  • Why Morphy has 7 pawn??

  • I got randomly unsubscribed from your channel and I have no idea how.

  • 6:45 When this dude moved his Queen to a3 instead of Qxd5, I instantly knew he is no way close to a GM level.

  • Get well soon mate

  • where is the link for first game?

  • HG Wells had me feeling the need for some Asimov! #Quote: 1) They’re like chess grandmasters... Put them in the same room and they would automatically challenge each other. 2) In life, unlike chess, the game continues after checkmate.

  • Hello...video is very good....👍👍💥💥

  • Agadmator should have worn the Barnes t-shirt if it is out(ig it's out)

  • 6:47 Why not Queen takes pawn on D5?

    • I think because then the black queen would capture the pawn on b2. If white does not capture d4 with c3, then Black then threatens to capture c3 with d4 and put the rook behind it on c8, leaving black with a dangerous passed pawn supported by queen and rook. This is hard to defend by white because then rook from a to c1 even runs into a knight fork at that point. White would have to take d4 with c3, but then this allows the black rook to come to c8 and grab the open c-file after knight takes knight on f3. White moving queen to a3 defends b2 and stops all of this, even though it makes the queen less active. Someone else can chime in with their ideas.

  • rook to ivanchuk

  • Cant play f6 if you dont have an f pawn. #Smart

  • Hey, f7 pawn is on a vacation again!

  • How does a Morphy saga climax? This so greatly predated world championships or a singular match that could define a chess player's career

  • The Owen Defense: Black fianchettoes his queenside bishop early to counter White's 1.e4. The Owin' Defense: "But Vinnie, it's like I told youse already, I'll have money next week!"

  • #suggestion #agadmator show us some games on fide chess olympiad 2020, now semi finals coming up today

  • I've got a random chess question: why can you only capture en passant with a pawn? I thought the historical point of en passant was to speed up the game. Instead of moving pawns one space at a time like the original rules, you can go two, but en passant was a way of making it so you can't push past without risk. It seems to me that any piece should be able to capture en passant with any piece because a pawn being able to move two spaces when it would be captured in one would be consider pushing past without risk.

  • Morphy was a guy everyone would want to be around.. quiet a stylish fella :)

  • Proud owner of a Barnes Coffee Mug! Start the morning off with a cup of the good stuff .... coffee black

  • Wasn't it mate in 2? Qg6 and Qg2?

  • Qg6 is much faster

  • Watching an odds match without a pawn is just aggravating; If Owens wins it means nothing. If Morphy wins it means nothing because they weren't actually playing chess. Playing without a pawn is just a made up game of nonsense.

  • Show us games betwen Steinitz and mr Barnes.

  • Why he didn't have a f7 pawn ?

  • Godmode is on

  • i think morphy is better withought a pawn and the white pieces.

  • far best chess channel, really great job Antonio! keep it up, support from Croatia, Slavonski Brod!!!

  • Dude i love morphy's game .plz cover more

  • The lack of f7 pawn is actually an advantage because you can never play f6

  • Owen is quite a bad player, I’ve had better games against 1200 rated players on chess.com
