This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

  • "The most powerful weapon in chess is the next move." Zugzwang: Halt mein Bier...

  • Why is this not in morphy saga playlist?

  • 6:00 why not capture knight with rook in the first instance

    • Duh bishop recapture never mind

  • fan of devolopment ahhahahah

  • What's this "sorry about that" and then grab something underneath the table in every single video?

  • 5:56 what if the bishop moved to H3 and attacked the rook? At worse two pieces for a rook?

  • #suggestion Garry Kasparov VS Anatoly Karpov "The Octopus Knight Game" from the 1985 championship! Wikipedia calls it "Kasparov's Masterpiece." It's known by chess players around the world as "The knight so strong that karpov gave up his queen just to get rid of it." This would be AMAZING. Would love to learn how much there is to learn from this game. I got into chess because of you and because of quarantine, and i'm already 1500 on rapid chess. Not so good at blitz, lol!

  • Paul Morphy: the ability to play chess is the sign of a gentleman, the ability to play chess well is the sign of a wasted life

  • Did you know "This position has never been reached before " was once "A completely new game" And few years later, " A completely new game " will be " This position has never been reached before ".

  • How do you pronounce your SEnewssr name...? Agadmator....? Just curious, love the videos and watch them all the time to try to learn how to not suck at chess! Haha

  • Both these guys are like 1400 modern day

  • Just heard that Magnus opened the applications for commentator on the 2021 chess tour, It would be great if you were one of the commentators.

  • Hey your pgn title seems incorrect... This is not a kings gambit declined

  • this is definitely one of my favorite chess games now

  • NO one of us noticed Agadmator saying rook to g3 ;)

  • #suggestion Vassily Ivanchuk vs Krajakin 2008 amber tournament(Rapid),where ivanchuk sacs queen for two pawns

  • Can you make a video on this game. What a sorcery is this.. so intense and blindfold game by Alexander alekhain www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1012007

  • So that's what's being "Morphy strong" is

  • 7:33 king is rook ;)

  • Big fan of development 😎

  • Recommendation: Ray charles (blind jazz legend) vs GM Larry Evans

  • Again a great video, i would love to see a game by morozevich! I sadly dont see so many games by him online :(

  • Morphy has Poison Pawn , up his sleeve for Johann. White had gained support for this with Knight captures Knight at C6m weakening Black Pawn structure at B7.

  • Can you analyze my game of chess?

  • If morphy is expert then lowenthall is except

  • "rook to g3", then I came to the comments section as fast as I could

  • 2:13 "Morphy is sort of ahead in development even though a lot of his pieces aren't developed."

  • We need more chess classic games!!

  • What does he do when he say “sorry about that” and reaches under the table? I have seen that in almost every second video he uploads, any clue?

  • he should cover the chess touny from the anitubers

  • I have been watching your channel for years now and I've never seen a bad video, hence I just click like straight away because I know it's gonna be good

  • those who are always wanna enjoy the show , leave a like we are an army !

  • Is anyone else having trouble getting on agadmator's channel?

  • What is 'that' you are you sorry about? Mystery.

  • 5:43 - But the knight doesn't have to move. If black were to play h5 in that position, then fxg4 would be met with hxg4, threatening discoveries the black king can't escape (since the bishop is covering g1). It might not ultimately be winning, but it would be a more robust defense than castling.

  • Morphy: you'll lose if you take one extra move to castle. Me inspired from Tal: What if I take two?

  • will this morphy's saga ever end? :( even capablanca saga was better. srsly, who chose this saga (in vote) over Karpov's or Alekhine's, let alone someone's from the top of the 80's/90's

  • Morphy handled his business.

  • Hello agadmator how r u ?

  • Has Morphy ever lost a game?

  • Johann didn't attack like a madman... what was he thinking?

  • The word "hope" got a special meaning today! 🙏😀

  • 7:33 Rgr

  • More Mad Max Barnes games. Thanks

  • Hello everyone ❤️❤️❤️

  • Can I ask one question? I’m new to Chess. Is Bh2 and Kh1 is Stalemate? Because the knight on g4 is protecting the Bishop. I don’t understand this please help me

  • Cover Komodo X scorpio that was one wild game

    • SenorQuichotte everybody knows that but that was some crazy attacking game by komodo

    • Scorpio is a POS engine. New SF nnue would thrash Scorpio

  • It took one move and too long to castle and morphy is an expert on one move and too long castle... Classic agad...

  • Hi

  • 7:33 Did the king replace the rook?

  • How many pawns could a passed pawn pass if a passed pawn could pass pawns?

  • 6:10 but isn't 2 minor pieces trade for 1 rook favourable?

  • Can u please cover some videos of 1988 world blitz championship which Tal won inspite of being drunk and was carried by someone else to the playing hall as in that state he forgot that he was having world championship match...?

  • Why does he always says sorry about that

  • I think Morphy just lets his opponents win the first match and one more somewhere in between to keep them interested.

  • Hey, I know you are probably quite busy and have lot of comments, but if I send you a position from a game I did today, can you analyse it and give some insight? This could be a fun/interresting new serie idea too. Love the channel, good work!

  • 7:32 it was in this position that the king became a rook

  • 6:10 if u play g3 u also get f4 don't you , attacking both knight and bishop

  • 8:59 and that’s all there is to the game.

  • Hello agadmator I am a new subscriber of your channel and my favorite player is morphy

  • Miss the mouse click at the beginning in this video

  • 5 rooks on the board

  • What a Saga, Morphy is awesome player, No blunders.

  • This Morphy looks pretty strong. I'm sure he could've won Pogchamps if he enter the tournament

  • at 5:15 I thought morphy would move the night and put him in check and gain advantage from there.

    • no, he could move his bishop.

  • Each video is not complete when agadmator doesn't say "sorry about that" in the beginning and you know it.

  • zoned out for a few seconds and before i know it 2:29 and Lowenthal is essentially busted

  • 4:15 proves that Morphy was the greatest as he saw 162 years into the future. And also this moment must have really confused Lowenthal.

  • When we would have safety breaks & practice safety, me and my friends would end up high af. #safetyfirst

  • #suggestion Stockfish beating AlphaZero in 22 moves while offering LOTS of material, in honor of Stockfish 12 (with neural network advancements) being released. www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1943393

  • Morphy.. the master of the art of the opening trap.

  • 9:18 I really enjoyed that idea when you revisited the critical blunder, and gave your thoughts on it at the end of a video. I hope you keep adding it to following videos.

  • 7: 33 Rook to g3 with the king 😅😅😅

  • Morphy : not a problem cuz we reached the position from the thumbnail Lowenthal: what? Morphy: what?

  • *Löwenthal bleeding and sweating* Gah! I was finally able to land a hit on Morphy! *gasp of air * *gasp for air* Morphy: Ho! Is that all you got? *wipes blood of wound which regenerates immediately L: Bakana! Morphy : Tell Hades the demon of chess send you! L : no no no *camera gors offscreen* NOOOOO

  • Show us the the immortal draw it's very fun

  • Fun Fact: The pawn move in the opening that Lowenthal made, e5, is the Lowenthal variation of the Sicilian!

  • “Paul Morphy... expressed the conviction that he had played poorly, rashly; that none of his opponents should have done so well as they did against him.”

  • 4:15 ...but Morphy says “Not a problem as we’ve reached the position from the thumbnail.” “Oh god not the thumbnail,” replies Lowenthal, “that can only mean one thing. I’m completely lost!”

  • On 5:54, why not bg3? After fxg4, bxe1, rxe1 or re2, ne5, Black it's seams better to me compared to exf4.

  • #Help Chess Puzzle You have to create a position where white has king and 3 pawns and black has only king. Following are the necessary conditions of this puzzle. Arranged position will be white to play. White will play for win but the final result will be a forced draw with accurate play from both sides. No double or triple pawns are allowed (for e.g. a2,a3 or b5,b6,b7).

    • @Anton Anton no buddy...even 2 pawns vs King endgame can be drawn sometimes...say, pawns on g2,h7 and white King is on a1 and black King is on h8. It's a drawn endgame even though white is up two pawns.

    • Three pawns? I think even one pawn will be enough for white to force a win, as long as it's not on the a or h files.

  • I guess Löwenthal went home and cried under the covers after this game

  • "Safety first" - that's what she said, before playing e4. Motivated by her, Agad was able to create some nasty discoveries in the complex position.

  • Karate Chess. Search Book-" The Petroff - Move by Move" . Question- Who is "Cyber Spock?" Answer: "AgAdMator.", And Check out Morphy defeating possible Black Knight Fork from Hell. withRook and King. The Holy Grail is the Holy Grail of : Queen / King- Fork

  • Man i had completely forgotten about the rook on a1 during the 2 pause........ lol🤦‍♂️🤣😅

  • Thx!

  • These Morphy games are just awesome. :)

  • You have a exellent rest of your day too agadmator:)

  • 4:16 Morphy says "not a problem as we've reached the position from the thumbnail". Damn Morphy knew this position was in a thumbnail.

    • Gentleman was so good he saw 1828323739 moves ahead and saw agadmator cover this game

  • Can someone please explain the mystery behind the "Sorry About That" ?!

  • Last we heard Lowenthal was still trying to avenge his loss from 1850.

  • Loving these Morphy games! :))

  • Nice, two Morphy videos uploaded during one day.

  • I love sneaky ideas almost as much as nasty discoveries.

  • 7:33 Rook to G3 LOL

  • "Safety first" man i hate when people tell me that, just let me do my job and stay out of the way

  • Great game and great analysis by agadmator bro

  • at 5:24 I was thinking about Be7 followed by Re4, how about this?

  • #suggestion Hey, you already got the T-shirt. How about some wild Barnes games (against other people)?

  • Morphy wanted to play Smith Morra Gambit : D I just love that
