The chess24 Legends of Chess is the 4th stage of the $1 million Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour and features Magnus Carlsen and his predecessors as World Champion Vishy Anand and Vladimir Kramnik. It consists of two stages, a 10-player preliminary, where each player plays each other once, followed by a knockout among the top 4. Prelim ties are played as 4-game rapid matches, while knockout ties are the best of 3 such matches. The prize fund is $150,000, with $45,000 for first place, while the winner also qualifies for the $300,000 Grand Final.
The time control is 15 minutes for all moves with a 10-second increment from move 1. The winner of a preliminary tie decided in rapid games gets 3 points. If the score is 2:2 an Armageddon game is played, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4 but a draw counts as a win for Black. A winner in Armageddon gets 2 match points, while the loser gets 1. The knockout format is the same except before Armageddon there are two 5+3 blitz games. No draw offers are allowed before move 40. Official website:

    • How do you do fellow kids

    • Agadmator using terms like op makes me smile 😁 Love your analysis gg

    • Lol

  • It's amazing that Naka can play such great chess and constantly take Carlsen to the brink in these rapid and blitz events, yet still be 4/9 and be completely out of it in the US Championship. He plays so boring when he plays classical and is seemingly constantly trying to defend a passive position and I think that's why his rating has been dropping so much over the last 6 years. He's so talented, but it's like he doesn't trust that he can play these intense and sharp positions in classical the way that, say, Nepo does. I think he could still be one of the best in classical again, but he has to play for activity like he always seems to in his 10 minute games.

  • analize artoim samsonkin vs hikaru nakamura 2009 i forgot which tour

  • fergalicious

  • Knight b to d2

  • Love this channel

  • 10:15 and it was on this move that magnus carlsen realised that his time has come.

  • Who's watching in 2050 when Carlsen is no longer world champion?

  • Why the f is this 5 days you have betrayed me

  • I hope in the future you put the order number in the thumbnail so I know which video to watch first. I don't like watching them in the wrong order.

  • Yeah sure. One won our hearts. Naka gets the Miss Congeniality Award. Histrionic much with the titles, Egads? Lol!

  • Antonio you should write a book!

  • After Qe5 there is still black's Ne6 move guarding the Queen's mating square g7, but then Bd4 , threatening Queen to mate on h8 (if Knight captures bishop, White mates on g7), so Kf8, now Qh8+, so Ke7, and finally Bc5 or Bf6 mate because the Knight is standing on the King's escape square. Ironic!

  • 7:02 Nothing wrong with Qe2, analysis seems flawed, Be6 isn't a strong move at all just loses the exchange.

  • One won the title, BOTH won the hearts of fans because BOTH played great, active chess.

  • Medo sat this game out

  • What is full form of words written on thumbnail?

    • Feel free to pause the video and find the winning idea 😊

  • hello everyone(in agadmator's voice) 0:00

  • Magnus is the best. Historically speaking, none was up to the mark as is he

  • Literally everyone:stay home stay safe Agadmator : *I just returned from my vacation*

  • There's been such a boom in the chess scene, so it's been quite a while since I've watched your videos, Agad, I forgot how good they were 🔥🔥! Great job

  • What's the meaning of the thumbnail?

  • Well, neither won my heart. I do see some 4 player chess with Nakamura. Must be a Bro-mance there now. Nakamura played very very well. He also does a lot for the chess community. He was very classy after the game and congratulated Magnus on winning. Magnus also acknowledged him for great play. I prefer great chess, and great analysis afterwards. Amazing your channel is almost at 800K. Grats! The little banter with chess players to each other is fun and very entertaining.

  • "Really really incredible stuff"

  • Man, i'm so used to hearing your voice that whenever i play chess i hear all your lines "captures captures" etc, even tho i'm not even english XD

  • Agadmator using terms like op makes me smile 😁 Love your analysis gg

  • Chess noob here, I'm proud of myself for spotting queen taking the e pawn at 9:15 but why delay it? It's a general weakness of mine, I spot good moves but don't calculate the build ups to them.

  • Anyone know what the thumbnail means? "PTVAFTWI"

    • @MCIG thank you!!

    • "Pause The Video And Find The Winning Idea" apparently

  • Can anyone tell me the letters from the thumbnail short for?

    • "Pause The Video And Find The Winning Idea" apparently

  • The title is applicable to all sports .... The loosing team always win our hearts❤️❤️ .

  • Awesome game!

  • Can someone please explain to me the meaning of the title

    • MCIG aren’t they all

    • "Pause The Video And Find The Winning Idea" apparently

  • P.ause T.he V.ideo A.nd F.ind T.he W.inning L.ine I think....

  • 8:40 it's not easy to find a good move for black

  • At move 29. Qc3, instead of playing Ra8, Magnus could've played b4. This pressures the Queen, and would maybe prompt Hikaru to offer a Queen trade on a1. Ran this b4 move through an engine and it actually ended up in a win for Carlsen. Could be wrong though, so let me know what you think :)

  • Found this 9gaging...

  • Pawn capture, knight capture, bishop capture, queen capture, you capture, me capture, they capture....

  • Even you are a bias? Oh ffs stop this shit.

  • Why do I feel that Agadmator is not happy with Magnus winning the tournament against Nakamura!

  • NAKA proved he's a top player

  • What is PVTAFTWI mean?

  • What's with that LOTR quote by Magnus?

    • Naka once compared Magnus to Sauron in a tweet, IIRC.

  • Is time for a Rashid Nezhmetdinov game! :)

  • Hi, whose picture is it on the top right corner of your screen?

  • I would say Hikaru won the game and the heart. Sorry, Magnus didn’t win anything in this one

  • You stole my word. Hikaru won my heart.

  • from the title ig Magnus Won, let's see

  • Agad’s reasoning on why he shall show the engine line is one of the most Slavic things ever

  • I love disgusting engine lines

  • This was the best Chess event I have ever seen. It was not unlike a historic boxing match. Both players were on the ropes countless times and it came down to a game of inches in the end. The event couldn't have been more epic. Magnus was at the point of total mental exhaustion to win this one. It took everything he had.

  • Bro please start to make videos on online chess olampiyad

  • Hey agadmator, if my wife gives birth to twin boys, I'm naming them Boris Vasilievich and Tigran Vartanovic. Just asking from you if this is a good idea. Thanks BTW for the videos that has improved my vast fan knowledge of chess.

  • Fantastic. Thanks so much for the greatly entertaining analysis.

  • PTVAFTWI = “Pause The Video And Find The Winning Idea” for everyone who is confused

  • I think he could have played queen to A1

  • Same like rcb

  • bobby fisher was the greatest ever

  • #suggestion Divya Deshmukh vs munkhzul davaakhuu. It happened today in Olympiad. Divya won in 15 moves.

  • hello

  • It's funny, I always find my opponents in 3 min blitz with disgusting engine lines😂 Seriously, cheating has to stop

  • #suggestion show the game of divya deshmukh vs munkhzul davakhuu which was played today in the fide online olympiad , where divya goes for h4 on move 4 and wins!!

  • #suggestion FIDE online Chess Olympiad 2020 - *Vishy Anand* vs *Parham Maghsooloo* The game was played today (Saturday 22th August) in round 5 of the Top Division. It starts with a full exchange sacrifice and ends with a beautiful mate.

  • At 9:20 why Rxb1? Why not Qxe5 immediately?

  • The title for this video is so appropriate. I have immense admiration for both Carlsen and Hikaru and how they fought it out during the tournament. Both of them deserved to win the tournament.

  • #suggestion Divya Deshmukh, Board 6, India vs Mongolia, FIDE Olympiad. Miniature #suggestion

  • I want to put all earth dollars together to reincarnate Bobby Fischer and watch him check mate magnus in zero moves

  • #suggestion Online Olympiad-Pool A- day 1-round2-India- NihalSarin vs Vietnam-Nguyen, Anh Koi an EPic game Agad here is the link

  • #suggestion Online o;ympiad day 2, pool A Divya Deshmukh vs Munkhzul_Davaakhuu

  • Hikaru lost in finals "again". Whats new?

  • You should do a prank on us one day : show the first two moves and then " it was in this position that xxxx resigned the game ... just kidding. " LMAO

    • That sort of thing has already happened, and it was not a prank.

  • Chat keeps saying E5 is hanging, chat is always right

  • What does "PTVAFTWI" mean?

  • The game starts and we have a brilliant first move by Magnus, castling king side, and already by move one we have a completely new game.

  • Hikaru = Speed demon 🔥

  • Beautiful game and inimitable coverage. I got the wrong move order for the couple of seconds but I massively enjoyed the show :-D

  • From game 1, Magnus looked jaded and tired. He has played tournaments constantly this year, going on and winning all but one. On top of that, he has been working for his sponsors, promoting chess, playing Banter Blitz etc. His brain is fried. He needs a nice long break to get his focus and his motivation back in order. Hikaru played great and was very unlucky not to win. However, against a rested Magnus, I believe this tournament would have ended after 4 easy rounds, in Magnus's favour. Congratulations once again to the GOAT, for fighting through to a win.

  • Hikaru seems to be the only pair who poses challenge to magnus in almost every game 😅😅

  • #suggestion can you cover nihal's recent olympiad game against his vietnamese opponent..the game was such a see saw battle In which nihal prevailed in the end

  • Berlin defence is getting boring, every game, same opening... They should go for something else next time!

  • Pls make a video with compilation of chess principles like you discuss during game.. 1. You should capture towards center 2. When opponent is attacking on king u attack him side s Corner files. 3. When to go for end game when you pawn and bishop are at same coloured square or different colored square.. Like this

  • The title of the video says it all

  • India vs Vietnam Olympiad game (nihal sarin) #suggestion

  • This game was simply a masterpiece! One of the most beautiful games I've seen!! I'm really happy I got to see it live :)

  • #suggestion nihal sarin vs anh khoi nguyen online olympiad 2020

  • The title of the video is so fitting, I had to watch it again even though I watched this game live. Hikaru indeed made the final so damn interesting with his guile, fight, against a player most dont stand a chance to take to match Day 7. He indeed won the heart of many fans.

  • You have no idea what Magnus really is

  • I would say: one won the event and the same one won "my heart", but whatever suits you. My humor comprehension is 0%. So I just needed to clear that up :D

  • What does agad mean by the thumbnail text??

  • leela vs stockfish evans gambit plz

  • Magnus won the tournament by drawing the game ......again.... I'm referring to the firouzja blitz final game which was controversial

  • Who wants Mr. BARNES !!

  • Nakamura was a majestic player in the tournament and he fought till the last breath extremely awesome stuff

  • 6:28 Im new to chess and I did not understand why agad referred to this as a disgusting line of moves. Can someone tell me why?

    • Disgust at the fact that a human does not have nearly the computational power of a modern chess engine

    • Its because its almost invisible to humans based on how "wrong" it seems (which makes it less of a candidate move), yet still works.

  • I'm new here the guy in the top right corner looks like one of the Key and Peele guys

  • 1:03 so e5 isn't hanging. Guys, we figured it out.

  • It would be great if you analyze Nihal Sarin's game against Zimbabwe opponent.....he was so low on time, all his pieces were on the eight rank stuck and he went on to trick his opponent and win🔥🔥🔥 #chessolympiad

  • I don't get the thbnail ☹️

  • We Americans will keep holding out and believing for Hikaru,he certainly is talented enough. To be as gifted a chess player as Nakamura is and still an entire miracle away from the title says alot about Magnus' positional skill level. He is like Karpov on steroids with twice the creativity of Kramnik.

  • I’m so happy that he Sshed, the fallkaru and his fan bois

  • In OTB magnus crushed him. This was close because Magnus was tired... he is playing for the past 30 days NonStop. There was no brake in legends of chess either

    • Don't forget that Magnus also drove across the US while moving his house and streamed 6 hours a day every day... oh wait. Making excuses for why this match was close is silly. Both Hikaru and Magnus played great chess and I think Hikaru, when it comes to rapid and blitz events, will also provide some great and incredibly close matches against Magnus

    • No need for excuses, Naka is no joke, follow Naka on, and watch him play guys like Alireza and Fedoseev and the way he crushes them, both of those players have given Carlsen a hard time in 3'0 online, with Fedoseev beating Carlsen 7-6 and Alireza too. Naka is very strong.
