This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

  • Lowenthal's Immortal. Johann Jacob Lowenthal won the game! Lowenthal deserves a Morphy's head.

  • Johann Jacob Lowenthal won the game! Lowenthal deserves a Morphy's head.

  • To play your Immortal Game against the likes of Paul Morphy? Well, that's a nice way to be remembered by posterity! Rest in Peace, JJL! You played "like a machine", according to Agadmator and the spectators.

  • What a game

  • wow the opening is old school nice.

  • "...and went out swinging he did.". Lol

  • When Antonio says "There's nothing more to be done here," he sounds like an emergency room doctor standing over an accident victim.

  • g4!-Ng7 Qf6-Qf8(and not QxQ) Bh6-Tg8 saves the knight but the position is really passive. Not so immortal to me.

  • @3:11 can’t black defend with Kf8?

  • What about Kf8? In the critical position after white's Qf6 I mean... Bh6 met with Rg8 and then black have a harsh time anyway, but I couldn't find an immediate crushing sequence...

  • it is nice to see Morphy going out swinging, as you said. Thanks for the video!

  • please continue this saga!!

  • really good match

  • At 1:55 couldn't he just grab the g7 pawn? What am I missing here?

    • Just off the top of my head, black has 3 pieces developed, white one. White needs to develop pieces. And if Qxg7, R8xG8 attacks the Queen and after it moves, the rook is developed on a open G file. So then 4 pieces developed to 1. Q to H6 just results in RxG6 and the Q has to move again. Depending where she goes, F6xE4 is threat, gaining back the pawn. So the end result would be no developing for white while also assisting black in gaining even more of a development lead and maybe not even holding the one pawn lead.

  • 4:44 why can't Knight capture on d4 pawn here?

    • Because the previous move by black, E6xE5 opened up the diagonal for the bishop, attacking the Queen. He wasn't ready to trade queens yet as shown by his other moves trying to avoid it later. The black Queen could easily just attack the knight and then you have both the white Queen and Knight being attacked. If the white Q goes to e4 or C4, it easily gets kicked back with pawn moves. If it retreats to d1, even better for black. C3xD4 may gain a pawn, but it leads to good counter attacks for black. My amateur take on this anyway.

  • Ohhh finalle he won against his nasty rival

  • add me on twitch for some instructive streams

  • Agad, plz make the video of Judit polgar vs Indian comedians game... She started the game with knight down position.. sacrificed a piece.. switched the board on comedians request and still won !! Very interesting game !

  • 1:56 why can't the queen capture the pawn at g7?

  • I love that quote.

  • I get so much better at chess by watching agadmator's chess channel.

  • "Nasty discoveries are coming.."

  • annoyingly your videos always have low volume

  • 3:11 What if Kf8 defending the knight?

    • The knight is still trapped and white is still deep in black territory. Kf8 also pins the knight by H6. If Qxf6, PxQ results in PxK the next move. I don't see any great moves, but black is slowly losing space to develop.

  • After 12.g4 Ng7 13.Qf6 Rg8 14.Bh6 Black could play Qf8 and save the piece for now. But after 15.0-0-0 it is impossible to get rid of the pin. It would be a slow painful death.

  • narrator, you have the most embarrising voice, not capable to comment

    • Yeah, that why he has one of the largest chess followings in the world.

  • I wonder what score these guys would have now in Lichess.org and Chess.com

  • Jeez, Lowenthal was no joke!

  • 3:11 What if Morphy had played Qf8...

    • The you have 3 pieces trapped by 2 and leaving white much more room to develop...

  • 11:44 hilarious moment, went out swinging he did! HAHAHA

  • King F8 after rook G8 holds the position, does not it? When protecting the knight.

  • Why not QF8 , BH7 , RH8 ? That defends the knight .

  • I just had to put my Stockfish desktop version to weigh in on this game to believe what I was seeing. You can really feel a frustrated Morphy in this game. That g4 move really upset him. This wasn't like he played the knight and saw g4. By his subsequent play you could tell g4 was totally unexpected. Morphy I think expected a defense of the "important" central e pawn with 12. Qe2 as more or less forced. Lowenthal probably saw it as just too passive (e.g. blocking the king B) and determined to find something else. This is a great saga. Enjoying the Morphy story. Seeing this game actually illustrates the very tough opposition Morphy had to defeat. Makes Morphy's achievements all the more noteworthy in chess history.

  • 10:00 Why not take Bxd7?

  • At 3:57 to say up the exchange and winning the game is completely wrong. Tighten up the analysis there buddy.

  • Ö

  • I love your videos. I'm not good at chess, and I hardly play, but your videos never fail to fascinate me. They are really well put together and your commentary is amazing. Please keep up the great work, you are awesome. 😊

  • If he was truly immortal. He would still be around today. Clickbait. dIsLiKeD

  • Agadmator, that the thumbnail you choosed in this vid is so accurate. I could just picture Morphy's face.

  • Lowenthal should have received the Morphe head.

  • And it was in this position that Agadmator.Depression Joined the game.

  • Löwenthal must have felt pretty good after this game with confidence that he could actually out play Morphy without relying on tricks or a Morphy mistake.

  • You could defend the knight with both the rook and the king, but it would leave black in an extremely passive position with the knight pinned and black not able to trade queens cus the pawn would then attack the pinned knight.

  • Murphy head gets a Barnes head...??

  • Found the move :-)

  • Löwenthal's manly sideburns defeat Morphy's effeminate mullett.

  • lmao agad the anime sweat drop hahaha

  • 4:39, is it a bad idea to just capture the d pawn with a knight?

  • Logan Paul!

  • @ 3:10 doesn't Kf1 hold? It's ugly but it doesn't lose a piece.

  • Lowenthal showing some competition!!! Much needed

  • Lowenthal might be a better player than Mr Barnes, but aint no-one asking for Mr Lowenthal merchandise.

  • I like that sweating thing its really funnh😂😂😂

  • Morphy after this game😮😮😰😰😱😱

  • That Was Monster Angry Morphy , never saw tat ! Morphy tried everything from his side but cant beat the devil

    • Lowenthal lost 8 games in this match though 🤣🤣

  • Nice game! After Qf6, if black defends the Knight on g7 with Qf8, how does white win? Black would be very passive but might try Nb8 and Nd7 to kick the white Queen away and then unpin with Qe7.

  • At 3:10 I think he could have saved the knight by playing Qf8 right ?

  • Yea great game 🔥

  • 3:17 there is Kf8 to defend the N a second time, instead of QxQ. I'm sure that's not a great position for black but you don't lose the N.

    • he must not have seen it as morphy played only adoption matches( meaning that he had blitz time while his opponents played with normal time against him) or it may have been a bad move down the line and he must have seen it and not played it. i think it is the first reason though

  • surprised you didn't award Lowenthal with a Morphy head!

  • Man..u should give lowenthal a morphy head for this..😁😆😆

  • Lowenthal seemed like a nice stand up guy and a good chess player, I don't know why Agad doesn't seem to like him.

  • Löwenthal played the previous game like a noob, but then he completely redeemed himself with this.

  • A good game by Löwenthal, but, I don't think it deserves the "Immortal" adjective. In general, an "immortal" game for a player is considered a dashing game in which you basically sacrifice everything and end up winning with some crazy combination. In this game, Morphy botched the opening. ... d5 is indeed what you want to play in the Sicilian, but also, if you are not prepared enough, it's very risky. That's why I always say that novice players should avoid the Sicilian, because the initial deflection in the center can lead to trouble, if you are not sure what you are doing. Of course, Morphy was not a novice player, but is noticeable the lack of Opening insight in the XIX Century. In general, in Sicilian systems, you first prepare the ... d5 advance with further development. ... d6 leads to some sort of Scheveningen System, which is very solid, and maintains the tension, which is what you usually want to do in the Sicilian: you deflect the center pawns of White, with potential of further advancement in the center. But, it's just potential, if you go too fast, as Capablanca said: "you'll end up full of holes", in this case, the hole in e5, which lead to the misplacement of the Knight, and all the further trouble for Morphy. In any case, to Löwenthal's credit, he took full advantage of Morphy's error, who, as it happens to many of us, when he realized he blundered, went full in in an attempt to create something out of nothing. Löwenthal showed great restraint and class in this game, making even the great Paul Morphy to pay dearly for his opening mistakes, with a perfectly accurate game. A great game indeed.

    • I get what you are saying: d5 is the move you want to play, but you should be really sure that you time it right. Its most often the crucial move for Sicilian players. But in this game, I feel that Morphy should have played d6 after knight b5. Allowing the knight check and the infiltration of the queen gives white too much initiative. Its kind of a standard move nowadays, but maybe not when this game was played. Maybe its games like this that helped to develop theory. Its easy for us, because we can benefit from learning from all the mistakes that these players made. Also, I think that the Sicilian defense is actually pretty easy to learn as a novice player. You don't need to be booked up that much if you are playing other novice players. You can develop your opening knowledge while you are trying the opening in games. And its a very fun opening to play with black. You need to be sharp from the first move.

  • The awesomeness of the thumbnail :D

  • I love how agadmator is getting very creative with the thumbnail.

  • I love it when both players seem uninterested in playing to a draw.

  • loved naval quote

  • 1:54 Cmon Agad how can you not explain why Qxg7 is not good? It's an obvious move! Rg8, Qh6 and what?...

    • You will lose the e4 pawn... And you develop the rook with tempo for black. Its not worth it. Thats why knight c3 is played first, to protect e4.

  • Even a stopped clock is right twice a day

  • Loving these games! (excellent commentary)

  • Knight is not trapped? At 3.03 Wq6 then Bq8 would save the knight? Am I missing anything?

  • Builds on L's previous victory. L saw through every trap Morphy laid for him and avoided it, and almost invariably saw his own best offensive move. I guess he's shaking off the rust, because he looks like a totally different player than in the early games of the match.

    • but he lost 8 games in this match though🤣🤣🤣

  • Lowenthal played well, or rather to say he was good at exploiting better position, but far from winning the whole match, nice one agad:). Bok i tebi Agade

  • The saga so far is not doing any justice to Morphy 's brilliancy. The games shown are depicting a disproportionate amount of games lost.

  • Morphy should have gotten Barnes head for this one

  • 1:56 why not Qxg7?

  • What’s the format for this match? Best of 20?

  • Lowenthal deserves a Morphy head, while Morphy deserves a Barnes head. Crazy, crazy stuff.

  • I like the channel, but commentary of this game is very bad. Agadmator hasn't mention so many variants. On g4 ng7 qf6 rg8 bh6 qf8? On d5 why white didn't capture the pawn?

  • But what if black played ng7 qf6 rg8 bh6 qf8. The most reasonable moves.

  • 1:56 Why Qxg7 is not an idea for white?

  • I very often encounter opponents that manage to be up a bishop pair

  • The quote is from amazing rich practical philosopher 😍More Naval quotes please: you will never get rich by renting your time ✅🎯

  • Hello. At 4.33 instea d of black grabbing another pawn with the knight, why not play black queen to F6, the idea being that after white then takes your knight, you can then play knight to F3, forcing white to move his king and to lose castling rights?

  • Lowenthal really deserved a Morphy-head for this game...!!

  • Me at 1 am looking at chess videos

  • löwenthal's playing like a machine in this match could be easily explained by him having prior to it a glass or two of laudanum. 🤣

  • Morphy -the oversmart overconfident arrogant brat

  • at 3:02 you can play ..kf8 bh6 rg8 and the game goes on..

    • @Safe Tex yes whites position is far supirior but the game is still playable, maybe not on masters level though 😅

    • Hello. That does actually seem to work but my guess is that Morphy did not play it as it ties up so many of black's pieces in the defense of the king. I guess Morphy wanted a more open position where he could hope for a mistake from his opponent. But who knows :)

  • Lowenthal going deeeeep

  • Amazing game by Lowenthal.
