The chess24 Legends of Chess is the 4th stage of the $1 million Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour and features Magnus Carlsen and his predecessors as World Champion Vishy Anand and Vladimir Kramnik. It consists of two stages, a 10-player preliminary, where each player plays each other once, followed by a knockout among the top 4. Prelim ties are played as 4-game rapid matches, while knockout ties are the best of 3 such matches. The prize fund is $150,000, with $45,000 for first place, while the winner also qualifies for the $300,000 Grand Final.
The time control is 15 minutes for all moves with a 10-second increment from move 1. The winner of a preliminary tie decided in rapid games gets 3 points. If the score is 2:2 an Armageddon game is played, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4 but a draw counts as a win for Black. A winner in Armageddon gets 2 match points, while the loser gets 1. The knockout format is the same except before Armageddon there are two 5+3 blitz games. No draw offers are allowed before move 40. Official website: chess24.com/tour

  • Agad: "What would YOU play in this position?" Me: "Pig to blunder 5."

  • I must ask.. As a self aware American.. What on earth makes you a captain America fan lol

  • That ending...

  • so The Berlin is the meta in 2020?

  • 2:42 turan saldırısı xD

  • The glitch is annoying ;(

  • I used to create such funny pawn structures when I just started playing against my dad 😂😂

  • Can someone explain why it's called the Ruy Lopez when my chess books call it the Spanish game?

    • Ruy Lopez had enough gold to buy Spain. next question?

  • After seeing the moment when "the material is completely equal on the queenside" Hikaru should have resigned. It was completely winning for Magnus. To make it longer is disrespect for the world champion. Thats why a lot of people don't like Hikaru. Look up a recent game of Nepo and Magnus and learn some modesty and know your place. Unless... He trully was thinking that he could win that...

    • well it is a quick round...sometimes it takes a moment to catch up and realize the situation you're in...maybe?

  • Magnus is a flipping millionaire can someone buy him a decent camera and microphone it’s kinda embarrassing

  • That outro tho

  • why there is no sorry about that?

  • Definitely the two best rapid player in the world! What a match. I think best of 7 is too much though

  • I like the older games before engines ruined chess

  • how you not gonna cover hikaru's brilliant wins yesterday?

  • Appears like agad is a huge Magnus fan😂😂

  • I have played the new move of this match plenty of times

  • I don't know why , but can't get enough of this channel . Anyone else feels like me ?

  • When I heard that f6 was almost played in all games of Berlin - “ it was in this position that I resigned the game as there was nothing to be done here “

  • He left the last seconds in for the next "Agadmator best moments" video.

  • 2:43 it's VI. 6 in roman numerals.

  • How is Magnus so much better than Naka

  • Me too the audio is not good.

  • 0:47 why not Nxe5? looks like a loose pawn.

    • @daniel gomez bravo haa i see now. Thanx bro

    • Qd4 threatens checkmate and the e5 knight so you lose a piece for a pawn

  • E5 HANGING 1:00

  • i guess its raining at the beach.....

  • Call it the Bird-of-Prey formation.

  • I can sense Magnus being exhausted from all the tournaments It reminds me of sinqufield cup

  • it's just painful watching Hikaru play on in these lost positions against Magnus

  • So brave of hikaru to exchange everything and go into the endgame with Magnus.

  • Why would you trade 4 pieces when you are down 2 pawns against the best endgame player in the world

  • Nakamura's attack pattern/pawn structure at 2:53 looks like the Crane Wing Maneauver in ancient warfare lol

  • Agadmator's thug life at 7:57..."even though you dont really care about it"

  • 1:12 Can't you capture though? After Qd4, threatening mate in 1 and attacking the knight, you can play Ng4, defending against the mate. Black plays Bxg4, white plays Qxd4, black captures the pawn with check on f2, and white plays Kd1, and there are no more useful checks and no captures available for black. White king is in the center of the board, but white definitely has some compensation. Plus, black wouldn't have many pieces left to attack the white king. I wouldn't mind playing this line tbh.

    • @Mats de Vink I haven't won a pawn, but I control the center and I have a superior pawn structure. I'm not particularly afraid of my king being in the center of the board, with 1 bishop and both knights out of the game on either side. I feel like I can exchange pieces rather easily and enter into an endgame with a better position, plus I will have the more active king. I'm not saying Hikaru should go for this, or that I would if I was a player of his caliber playing against the world champion, but I wouldn't mind playing this position against some other player at my level (~2100 rapid rating online).

    • So in the end you have not won a pawn, your king is in the centre, black’s queen is incredibly active and you have lost castling priviliges, seems like a terrible position.

  • Magnus is so damn strong. Hikaru can calculate tactics quickly but watching Magnus find these subtle moves which slowly wrench apart an opponent's position is kind of scary.

  • Hikaru is the killer.

  • It would of been interesting to see how black finishes the game to a win

  • Magnus will be winner at the end anyways

  • That kingside pawn formation by Nakamura without a white squared bishop looks suicidal.

  • 2:38 I’m sure pvc could come up with a name for ir

  • Why did Hikaru aggressively trade down into a losing end game?

  • 2:40 strange setup - see hikaru's two videos on ranking chess openings this one looks sort of like "the hippo"

  • Thanks for working through your holiday! What a guy!

  • 2:50 looks like a crab

  • And it was in this position, using one of the oldest openings known in chess, that two grandmasters still found a unique position after only 10 moves.

  • Noce work as usually, but the sound is horrible.

  • And it was in this new position Medo laid to rest.

  • "Do" is missing in the title (QUASM) - and no, it is not in the thumbnail. See e.g.: _youtube DOT com/watch?v=t4yWEt0OSpg&t=1m49s_ See also _youtube DOT com/watch?v=kS5NfSzXfrI_

  • I like the last seconds after two-three 'uhh uhh' and then a good humming before the video ends.

  • Thanks for your comments!

  • Hikaru: *offers trade for 4 straight pieces* Magnus: ...ok? Hikau: *forfeits* ???

    • @Qwerty BC Maybe the buffet was opened

    • yeah i genuinely dont understand what he was thinking for offering that many trades after being down two pawns

  • What a sad failure for Hikaru

  • 2:48 it’s called the samurai

  • I always thought the berlin defence was called the "brilliant" defence, weird

  • It will be great if you create a series of unorthodox/unusual opening games.

  • I can t wait for blitz games

  • This is so great that that advantage can be gained with black pieces depending on how u play..

  • Ok let is watch this game

  • I am noticing that magnus Carlson loves to prepare moves, sometimes not preparing it is stronger but he always prepare moves.

  • And Magnus lost the 3rd set in the end

  • Hikaro is fading...makes you wonder if Magnus lost the first match to draw out Hikaro's tactics or to make the competition more interesting for the fans

  • Why do both of them prefer black?

  • Breaking- Magnus blundered in the next blitz game and lost

  • Magnus should play his natural game as he usually does

  • You need some rest just like Magnus loosing the set today

    • finally he let the set free. it was so tight. now it is so loose.

  • Magnus won but in general he is playing lousy chess. He is a great positional player not Tal.

  • "The material on the board is completely equal... on the queenside"

  • Not sure I need to watch the next World Championship. Is Magnus the only one who doesn't make mistakes?

  • Nakamura won the match he won the first game of blitz and draw second one . The score is 2-1 for Hikaru

  • I wonder why he traded down into that end game?

  • Agadmatorino and I fightin all Binod's zombies in the chat 😎😎

  • I hope they will realize that they cannot both play just with the black pieces

  • 9:31 agadmator.exe has stopped working

  • Best video ending ever

  • Wtf why did hikaru trade everything when he’s down on pawns?

  • Is this game really played by Hikaru Nakamura?!! 🤷🏽‍♂️ Or by some Kid who Hacked his system?? Playing against the World Champion ( Endgame MACHINE ) , already down 2 Pawns ( connected ) still, gone for trade everything !! 🤦🏽‍♂️

  • Got to run..maybe I can catch a game this evening.

  • Like the new Digs agad 👍 is it temp ? Is Medo happy?

  • At 3:15 Hikaru just blunders the opportunity to play Rook f to e1 for a Tetris line

  • please show us the standings mate please

  • why exactly did Hikaru start trading tons of pieces down when he was at a clear disadvantage on the king's side? just seems really odd? surely there was some counterplay in there rather than simply heading straight for a losing position

    • X Æ A -12 It’s all good :) I can understand why this question was asked because it’s not so obvious why this position was terrible for white, all of black’s pieces were much superior compared to the white counterparts especially the useless white knight. You might trick a 1600 in such a position but not against the World Champion.

    • Faz Naz ooh okay, my bad lol

    • X Æ A -12 Oh i was replying to the original comment lmao, your second comment i agree with.

    • Faz Naz yeah I said there may have been a combination, but still magnus’ pieces were way too dangerous. Hikaru did walk away with the victory due to magnus blundering early in March 3/4, so fair play to him

    • Not really, i saw no combination that could even show any form of resistance and I’m sure Hikaru didn’t see anything either. It’s pretty much, pick your poison.

  • Yeah yeah A......... good bye guys.

  • Agadmator chess analysis = legendary

  • Fined!!!! Fined $1000 dollars for fixing the camera... come on.. crazy...

  • However the material on the board is completely equal "ON THE QUEEN SIDE" 😁

  • 2:44, 9:34 agadmator.exe stopped working

  • Never play f3....

  • *Agadmator is still on holiday in the room next to his usual room.* 😁😁

  • But why did Hikaru trade all his pieces when he was down two pawns?

  • Why Hikaru forced trades into unequal endgame? He just resigned a few moves after that

    • I can only assume that he started trading off pieces because looking at white's position there really isn't anything that helps white win or draw the game, so he just went for trading pieces for lack of any other better ideas in that position

  • Capture captures!

  • The recent draw Magnus did with the white pieces is so that there is no excuses like “oh I was upset over the fine”.

  • Why the hell would Hikaru trade down so willingly into an undesirable endgame 2 pawns down?

    • my only theory is that he was maybe trying to trade pieces to try and stop the ongoing attack from carlsen, but the queens had already been traded off and there wasn't really any other way to continue it as black so I don't really understand it.

    • You are welcome not to trade. Black would be very happy to keep pieces, since there is crushing attack ongoing.

    • @Slugger Mendoza hey slugger why dont you just play checkers fool!

    • Yeah, he should’ve checked with you first to see if it’s okay

    • Yeah never seen a player rush to such an obvious loss, he should’ve just resigned knowing he’d lost but Hikaru wanted the stats to not look to be as much of a blowout as it was in reality. No one in chess has a bigger ego than Hikaru..

  • Another great video and so so quick as always.

  • Yea the sound is quite bad but I guess since its not the usual setup...... But even though.... its hard to listen, sounds like a low quality skype call.

  • I am here just for the analysis from the best And ofcourse the "hello everyone" and "captures captures...."

  • Back when I was studying the Ruy, I determined to play Nc3 to counter the Berlin, transposing into the Spanish 4-Knights. I don't know why more people don't play this.

    • Because Black has several good options against it? I play 4...Bd6 myself

  • Agadmator looks like General Zod of Kandor.

    • Bruh He does actually

  • Why they play only Berlin...

  • That's the famous "Buffalo Horns" attack.
